The Challenger 600 began as Bill Lear's concept for a long-range business jet called the LearStar 600. Canadair purchased the rights in 1976 and redesigned it as the Challenger 600. The Challenger 600 series entered service in 1980. Canadair was acquired by Bombardier Aerospace in 1986, who continued to develop and produce the series. The Challenger 600 series has a lasting legacy in business aviation, known for its combination of performance, range, and comfortable cabin, and it influenced the development of other aircraft like the Bombardier CRJ regional airliner and the Global Express. A total of 81 Bombardier Challenger 600 aircraft were built between 1978 and 1982.
