The Convair 580 was a twin-engine turboprop aircraft converted from the earlier CV-340 or CV-440 Convairliner series. This conversion involved replacing the original piston engines with powerful Allison 501-D13 turboprops and modifying the aircraft's tail section. The conversion was a joint effort between Convair and Pacific Airmotive, aiming to boost the Convairliner's performance with improved speed and range. A total of 184 Convair 580 aircraft were built. These were converted from the Convair 440 model. The conversion process took place over a period of seven years. Despite not being in production since 1954, the Convair 580 remains in use, particularly for cargo transport.
