The Hughes OH-6 Cayuse, often nicknamed "Loach" (from the acronym LOH for Light Observation Helicopter), was a single-engine light helicopter developed by Hughes Helicopters. It was designed for the US Army to replace its Bell H-13 Sioux fleet. A total of 1,420 Hughes OH-6 Cayuse helicopters were built. This primarily refers to the OH-6A variant produced for the U.S. Army. Production of the OH-6 began in 1965, following Hughes' win of the Army's Light Observation Helicopter (LOH) competition. While the Army initially ordered 714 helicopters, this number was later increased to 1,300. The OH-6 proved valuable during the Vietnam War, particularly for reconnaissance and transport missions. Production for the U.S. military eventually shifted to the Bell OH-58 Kiowa, but the Hughes 500 series, a civilian variant, continued to be manufactured.
