The Lockheed T-33 Shooting Star is an American-built subsonic jet trainer aircraft. It was developed from the single-seat Lockheed P-80/F-80 Shooting Star, America's first operational jet fighter, by lengthening the fuselage to accommodate a second cockpit and instrumentation. The "T-Bird," as it was often nicknamed, played a crucial role in training pilots transitioning from propeller-driven aircraft to the burgeoning jet age. A total of 6,557 Lockheed T-33 Shooting Star jet trainer aircraft were built. This number includes those manufactured by Lockheed, Kawasaki, and Canadair. Lockheed produced 5,691 T-33s, Canadair built 656, and Kawasaki manufactured 210. The T-33 was developed from the Lockheed P-80/F-80 fighter and first flew in 1948.
