The Supermarine Spitfire is a legendary British single-seat fighter aircraft that played a pivotal role in the Royal Air Force's (RAF) defense during World War II, particularly during the Battle of Britain. It was the only British fighter aircraft in continuous production before, during, and after the war. The Spitfire became synonymous with the Battle of Britain (July-October 1940), where it helped defend Britain against the German Luftwaffe. While the Hawker Hurricane flew more sorties, the Spitfire's superior speed and agility allowed it to engage German fighters, particularly the Messerschmitt Bf 109, on more even terms and achieve a lower attrition rate and higher victory-to-loss ratio than Hurricane units. A total of 20,351 Supermarine Spitfires were built, according to the Royal Air Force and the Supermarine Spitfire Association. This figure includes all variants and production years from the initial prototype to the final models.
