The Douglas DC-6 is a piston-powered aircraft developed by the Douglas Aircraft Company between 1946 and 1958. Initially planned as a military transport during World War II, it was adapted for commercial long-range travel after the war. It was the first Douglas aircraft with a pressurized cabin. It featured a longer fuselage and more powerful engines than its predecessor, the DC-4. Known for reliability, it transitioned from passenger to cargo service and continues in use today. Major airlines operated the DC-6. Variants included cargo and passenger versions. A VC-118 named "The Independence" served as President Harry S. Truman's presidential aircraft and is now on display. Early issues with in-flight fires led to modifications after a crash and temporary grounding in 1947.
Western Airlines was a major airline in the United States that operated from 1925 to 1987. It was originally founded as Western Air Express and initially focused on airmail service, but quickly expanded to include passenger flights.
